How Broken Drumsticks Are Upcycled into Pens and Keychains

About ECO MUSIC

Since 2007, Nice Company has been running ECO MUSIC, an initiative that gives new life to waste generated through music activities.

Broken drumsticks, in particular, often feel too meaningful to simply throw away.

Through the support of participating music studios and instrument stores, used and broken drumsticks are collected and transformed into new objects through the ECO MUSIC project.

Rather than treating them as waste, we turn them into items that can continue to be part of someone’s musical life.

Animal Pens

Broken drumsticks are transformed into mechanical pencils and ballpoint pens featuring small animal designs.

These items are produced in collaboration with Rinkul, a workshop based in Asahikawa, Hokkaido—an area of Japan known for its woodworking craftsmanship.

One user told us:

“I love the gentle, natural feel of the wood so much that I don’t want to use any other pen.”

Mini Drumstick Keychains

We also turn broken drumsticks into miniature drumstick keychains.

They are handmade by a traditional amulet maker in Tokyo.

They may not carry the same spiritual significance as an amulet from a temple, but we like to imagine that each one is blessed by the god of rhythm.

Custom Orders Available

Both the Animal Pens and Mini Drumstick Keychains can be produced as custom items.

We can also create them using your own broken drumsticks, allowing a memorable stick to be transformed into something you can keep rather than discard.

This can be a meaningful option for musicians, bands, music schools, studios, events, and brands looking for a unique item with a real story behind it.

Giving Music Materials a Second Life

ECO MUSIC began with a simple idea: materials connected to music should not automatically become waste once they break.

A drumstick may no longer be playable, but it still carries the marks of rehearsals, performances, and hours spent making music.

By turning these materials into new objects, we hope to preserve some of that history while encouraging a more thoughtful and sustainable approach to music culture.
