We had the chance to speak with Eiji, the drummer of Over Arm Throw, about his experience using Clear Grip and how it has impacted his playing.
Discovering Clear Grip
Eiji first came across Clear Grip through an Instagram story by Masuo from Drummers Top Team (DTT).
"At first, I was surprised by the fact that it was clear! But then I thought—actually, this makes perfect sense!"
Traditional grip tapes are usually colored, which covers the original design of drumsticks. Eiji appreciated that Clear Grip preserves the stick’s appearance while also remaining virtually unnoticeable when applied.
First Impressions and Experience
"I used Clear Grip in a live performance and was honestly surprised."
Eiji had been dealing with dry hands, which made his drumsticks slip. Previously, he had tried other grip tapes or even tennis racket tape to enhance his grip. However, most grip tapes available were thick, and when wrapped around the stick, they made the grip area even bulkier, shifting the stick’s balance downward.
"Clear Grip is only 0.1mm thin, so it doesn’t alter the feel of the stick. Plus, since it wraps without overlapping, the stick maintains its original balance."
When Eiji wrapped Clear Grip around his preferred sticks, he was shocked at how natural it felt—like nothing had changed.
Impact on Live Performances
After using Clear Grip in a live setting, Eiji noticed significant changes in his playing:
✔ Snare drum sound became more open and resonant
✔ Cymbal tones became clearer and more defined
✔ More comfortable grip, reducing unnecessary tension
✔ Increased focus and enjoyment during performances
"At Club Citta, I had one of the best performances of my life. The sound felt amazing, and playing was pure joy!"
He also emphasized that drumsticks and pedals—parts that are in direct contact with the body—should be as comfortable and stress-free as possible. Reducing unnecessary stress allowed him to focus on playing without distractions.
How Does It Compare to Other Grip Tapes?
✅ Higher durability – Less wear and tear over time
✅ Doesn’t mute the stick’s natural sound – No unwanted damping effect
✅ Doesn’t alter balance – Unlike thicker tapes that shift the stick’s center of gravity
"Before Clear Grip, I tried various grip tapes—some with perforations, different thicknesses (0.25mm, 0.5mm), and different materials. While some were decent, they all slightly muted the stick’s natural resonance."
With Clear Grip, Eiji found that his drumsticks still sounded and felt exactly as they should.
Who Should Try Clear Grip?
🎯 Drummers who struggle with dry hands or sweaty palms
🎯 Players who dislike the bulkiness of regular grip tapes
🎯 Those who want to preserve their drumstick’s design
"If you already use grip tape, you’ll definitely notice the difference!"
Cost Performance
Clear Grip comes in a 2-pair set (4 pieces) for ¥1,540 in Japan. While slightly pricier than other grip tapes, Eiji considers it worth the cost:
"Compared to brands like Pearl or Berni, which cost under ¥1,000, Clear Grip is a bit more expensive. But the performance makes it worth it!"
He also noted that other tapes tend to be heavier, shifting the weight of the stick downward. With Clear Grip, the balance remains unchanged, making it easier to handle and play naturally.
Impressions of 380 Sound
"DTT and Nice Company (Brands at 380 Sound) create products that solve real problems!"
✔ Tone Filter – Quick and easy sound control
✔ Cymbal Cleaner – Removes only dirt and fingerprints without fading logos
"Every product is clearly designed by people who understand the needs of professional drummers."
